The Brief

Due to the promotion of the existing Regional Managing Director to the company's corporate head office in Johannesburg and no suitable internal candidates for the position, a decision was taken to hire the replacement externally.

Reporting to the main Board in Johannesburg, the new Regional Managing Director will have full P&L responsibilities for the Middle East region where the company has operations in the UAE, Qatar, Oman & KSA. In addition to the day to day operations of the business units, the appointed person for the position needs be a strategic thinker, well connected and well regarded in the construction industry with a view to forming new strategic alliances in order to take the business to the next level.

The Process

With extensive knowledge of the UAE market, it was agreed to carry out an international search focused on the 1st tier contractors in South Africa, Hong Kong & SE Asia and the MENA region excluding the UAE.

After two weeks, the research team under the direction of the Managing Partner had compiled an extensive long-list of all the CEOs, Regional CEOs, Managing Directors and General Managers of the leading 1st tier contractors involved with major building & infrastructure projects. After evaluating the long-list with the client, a further three weeks was taken to carry out interviews and draw up a potential short-list of five candidates for client interview, with initial interviews in Dubai and then Johannesburg.

The Result

The preferred candidate had recently moved back to the region with a local organisation, their initial agreement had not been honoured and the candidate was keen to move. BCI secured the candidate for the client despite an aggressive counter-offer by the

The appointed candidate joined the organistion 6 weeks early after successfully negotiating an early exit from his previous employer, a smooth hand-over took place and the candidate went onto establish new strategic relationships which took the business forward.
